Let's start gardening
Gardening is the process of growing plants, such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, or herbs, in a designated area called a garden. Gardens can be big or small, and located in many different places, such as a backyard, a community, or even in pots on a balcony or windowsill.
Why should we start gardening?
Gardening is a fun, hands-on activity that can help you understand subjects such as science, nature and the environment. You can learn about plant life cycles, what you can grow and eat and the importance of plants on our planet.
Gardening for beginners
Learn how to garden in five simple steps
-
Decide what you want to grow: Choose plants that are easy to grow like mint or wild flower.
-
Choose the right location:Choose an area of your garden that gets plenty of sunlight.
-
Prepare your soil: Your soil needs to be dark and full of nutrients. You can improve the quality of your soil by adding compost or compost matter (compost is a mixture of fruit & veg waste that turns into nutrients)
-
Plant your garden: Once you have chosen your plants and prepared your soil, it’s time to plant your garden. Make sure to space out your plants and water them well.
-
Care for your garden: Water your plants regularly and weed your garden regularly to keep it healthy and thriving

Gardening Tips
Weeds can quickly take over a garden and can sometimes take water and nutrients from your plants. Regular weeding (removing weeds) can help keep weeds under control.
Collect rain water for your plants instead of using water from your tap
Rotate crops: Planting the same type of plant in the same spot year after year can lead to pest (insect) problems. Rotate and move your crops to keep your soil healthy and your plants thriving.
Instead of buying a watering can, use a milk carton. You can decorate and reuse it over and over again.
Water your plants consistently, but avoid overwatering. It is best to water in the early morning or evening to prevent evaporation.
Remember not all plants grow in every place. Choose plants that are well-suited to your area whether you live in a very sunny or cold place.
Remove dead or damaged branches to encourage new growth.
This will also help to control the size and shape of your plants.
Keep an eye out for pests and diseases and treat them promptly. Use natural pest control methods if possible to avoid harmful chemicals.
When your plant gets bigger, remove it from your current pot and repot the plant in a bigger pot.
Gardening can be a relaxing and rewarding hobby.
Take time to appreciate the beauty of your garden.
